Self Assessment tax return services

Your tax return prepared and filed well before 31 January

Carter Bond prepares and files your Self Assessment tax return, and tells you what you owe and when to pay it. You send us the paperwork and we do the rest.

Self Assessment deadlines and penalties

The online deadline is 31 January, and the balance of any tax owed is due the same day. File a day late and HMRC charges a £100 penalty, with more added the longer it runs. Payments on account for the following year catch people out too, especially in the first year of self-employment.

Self Assessment and Making Tax Digital

If your self-employment and property income is over £50,000, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax has applied to you since April 2026. The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. We’ll tell you if and when it affects you, and handle your quarterly updates alongside your return.

Self Assessment FAQs

When is the Self Assessment deadline?

31 January for online returns, and 31 October for paper returns.

What happens if I file late?

HMRC charges £100 if your return is up to three months late, with further penalties after that.

Do I need a tax return if I’m paid through an umbrella company?

Not usually, if PAYE is your only income. You may still need one if you have other income, such as rent or self-employed work.

Send us last year’s return, or tell us it’s your first. We’ll confirm the cost.
